Support The Sumaya Dalmar Award

Sumaya Dasia Dalmar was a passionate speaker, advocate and community leader who championed the rights of trans women of colour. Widely regarded as an inspiration and role model, Sumaya was an active member of Black Queer Youth (BQY) —a support group for LGBTQ Black youth in Toronto—and starred in a ground-breaking documentary film that explored the intersection of gender, trans-identity and traditional Somali culture.

Tragically, Sumaya died suddenly at the age of 26, the night before she was to take a role in the education department of The 519—Canada’s largest LGBTQ2S Community Centre.

The Sumaya Dalmar Award was created by Sumaya’s friends and community members in recognition of her life’s work. Please join us in this effort to memorialize Sumaya and continue her legacy. Your tax-deductible donation to support the award will ensure that her story continues to inspire, educate and provide support for Toronto Metropolitan University students who identify as trans and racialized for years to come.
