The Viola Desmond Student Award and Bursary

Viola Desmond (1914-1965) was a Black Canadian entrepreneur from Nova Scotia who worked toward employment opportunity, empowerment and equal access for Black women in Canada. In 1946, Viola was at the centre of a watershed event in the history of activism against discrimination in Canada when she was arrested for refusing to move from the whites-only orchestra seating in the Roseland Theatre in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. In November 2018, a $10 Canadian banknote was launched nation-wide in her honour.

Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) is the only university in Canada with an awards program in her name. The annual Viola Desmond Awards ceremony recognizes the contributions of outstanding Black Canadian women to the Ryerson community.
