The Recess Project

Recess is not for the faint-hearted. The Recess Project – housed in Toronto Metropolitan University’s Diversity Institute – seeks to make a difference in the lives of children vulnerable to the effects of systemic bullying, social exclusion, discrimination and social harm that are some of the negative aspects to recess.

We work with schools to research the current recess environment: the context, the social landscape, the psychosocial impact on children, and levels of engagement. And we hire, train, and match university students with schools to help ensure active, meaningful play during the school day – for all children.

We are continuing to scale up and see our project in school boards across Canada. We have a partnership with Physical and Health Education Canada to extend our reach nationally. In this partnership, funded by the McConnell Foundation, we will oversee a national advisory board for recess, a national position statement, legislative changes and new policies, and a national social media campaign.

But we need your help. As an organization dependent on grants, our need for funding is constant and at times, overwhelming. Your donation can help us make a difference in the lives of vulnerable children, and ensure that recess, which should be a time of play filled exuberance, is experienced equitably by all of its participants.
